My father was a Norwegian sailor, who traveled around the world during WW II. Much later, when I was a child, he gave me a small ceramic vase from a voyage to Japan. The vase was stamped “Occupied Japan”. I didn’t understand what that meant at the time; all I could see, as I held it in my hand, was a tiny ceramic vase with lovely flowers painted on it. Since that time, I’ve had an affinity towards anything Japanese. Imagine my delight when my youngest son went to live in Japan to teach English! Whenever he came home to NY , he would bring me some Japanese goody, like a bag made from recycled kimonos, a piece of indigo fabric, a little purse with Japanese dolls all over it, a pink, textured wrapping cloth, a pillow with a geisha on it, or a wooden, painted Japanese boy. I was in love all over again! Japanese fabric is exquisite in its colors and designs. It brings me to that mysterious island, and into a life and culture very different from my own.
Please enjoy the vibrancy of the fabrics, and the stories they tell.
